Jean-Baptist Lamarck

Lamarck was one of the first people to develop a theory of evolution. His theory stated that acquired traits were passed down through the generations. This was incorrect because offspring do not ever inherit acquired traits. The offspring are changed by genetic mutations to adapt to their environment.
